What Are Phthalates? Phthalates are chemicals used to soften toys, making them more pliable. Phthalates are used in everything from nail polish to air fresheners. Raw PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) is very hard and hard to work with; phthalates are added to make the material softer therefore increasing it’s uses. Recent studies have shown certain Phthalate levels beyond trace amounts are not healthy for humans. Intex Recreation has taken the initiative to produce items which comply with The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA). You will see markings and indicators on all 2009 Intex kids’ floats and toys assuring you that these items do not contain any harmful phthalates.
